Dress Code

We hate even having a dress code and the absolute worst thing to have to do is talk to someone about the way they present themselves to clients. Please don’t make us.

Ask yourself daily before coming to work, “Do I look like I work in the personal style industry?”

There a few things you can’t wear, some advice and one BIG RULE, as follows:

  • BIG RULE: Your hair has to be clean and “done”. If your look is unkept and oily/dirty looking, make sure that look is achieved with product, not dirt and oil. How can you ask a client to trust you with their hair if yours looks bad?

  • Casual is fine, but put some thought into your appearance, because you’re in the appearance business. Like it or not, clients judge you in the first few seconds of meeting you based on how you look. And unfortunately, the younger you look, the more they judge you. Do you look like you should be charging your prices? Do you look like a professional hair stylist in an expensive salon? People judge, don’t present them an opportunity to misjudge you because of how you’re dressed or the fact your hair looks a mess.

  • Shoes should appear clean. No Crocs, Uggs, or rubber pool flip flops.

  • No lounge or workout wear unless it’s been styled for work. Yoga type pants cannot be worn as outerwear. Leggings, tights, yoga pants, Lycra, Spandex and similar garments can be only be worn as an undergarment beneath a dress, skirt, shirt or top that covers your butt and your crotch.

  • Jeans and T-shirts are fine. Spaghetti strap tops and muscle type shirts are fine, just try to make it look stylish and don’t show too much cleavage or side boob (more on showing skin below).

  • Hemmed shorts are okay. No cut offs or daisy dukes with unhemmed legs, no biker shorts, board shorts, basketball/workout shorts, or spandex/lycra shorts.

  • No political, religious or otherwise controversial statements on clothing or in the form of tattoos. A tattoo that says “down with right-wing black lesbian Muslims” emblazoned across a rebel flag or “Fuck (insert politician’s name here)” for instance, will result in you wearing a cover up or going home to change. No depictions of sexual acts or genitalia. If you want to proclaim your religious or political opinions to the world, go for it on your own time or get a blog.

  • About showing skin - It should not be apparent that you are going without a bra or underwear. Also, no clothing that shows side boob or butt cheeks. Those are come-on man’s.

  • Hygiene - you should appear and smell clean.

Dress and grooming is an area where common sense should come into play. If we’re having to tell you more than a few times that you’re not presenting yourself in a way that’s going to attract clients, you’re in the wrong salon.
